Using an engaging case-based format and drawing on the clinical expertise of our faculty and the latest clinical evidence, this roundtable discussion has been developed to provide you with insights on multiple aspects of ECMO cannulation. Cannulation is a fundamental aspect of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy. The securing and maintenance of vascular access for the provision of ECMO may be technically challenging and requires careful consideration of numerous factors, including those specific to the patient, clinical problems, and the type of support that is needed to achieve therapeutic goals. Appropriate management of cannula sites in patients receiving ECMO can also help to optimize outcomes, which carries significant implications for nurses and other staff involved in bedside care. ECMO cannulae require careful attention to mitigate clinical complications such as infection, bleeding, cannula position problems, and others.
