Clinical Considerations for the Septic Patient with Acute Kidney Injury

Approximately half of new-onset cases of acute kidney injury in the intensive care unit are due to sepsis. These patients face high rates of mortality and often require complex interventions such as continuous kidney replacement therapy (CKRT) to facilitate recovery. Septic patients with AKI present unique management challenges to practicing clinicians, and familiarity with the intricacies of therapies such as CKRT may help to improve patient outcomes. This roundtable discussion features several leading clinical faculty who will address several aspects of the management of septic patients with AKI, including fluid management and pharmacologic approaches during CKRT. In addition, our faculty will review evidence related to the role of extracorporeal blood purification in septic patients with AKI.
