RAND 36-Item Health Survey (RAND-36, or RAND)
Health-related quality of life survey instrument, which is comprised of 36 items assessing eight health concepts: physical functioning, role limitations caused by physical health problems, role limitations caused by emotional problems, social functioning, emotional well-being, energy/fatigue, pain, and general health perceptions. Physical and mental health summary scores are also derived from the eight RAND-36 scales.

Randomized study
A study in which individuals are randomly allocated into separate groups (treatment versus control) to compare different comparison groups and avoid bias.

Recurrent peritonitis
A peritonitis episode that occurs within 4 weeks of completion of therapy of a prior episode but with a different organism.

Red Blood Cell (RBC)
Cells in the blood stream that carry oxygen in a complete molecule called haemoglobin.

Refractory peritonitis
Failure of the effluent to clear after 5 days of appropriate antibiotic therapy

Regimen
A regimen is a systematic plan of therapy that is generally characterized as intermittent or continuous when referring to the duration of dialysis, and supine or ambulatory when referring to the position of the patient (for PD).

Relapsing peritonitis
A peritonitis episode that occurs within 4 weeks of completion of therapy of a prior episode of peritonitis with the same organism or a prior sterile episode.

Renal Osteodystrophy
Generalized bone disease resulting from metabolic disorder caused by renal failure.

Repeat peritonitis
A peritonitis episode that occurs more than 4 weeks after completion of therapy of a prior episode with the same or different organism.

Respite Care
Temporary or part-time care provided by a healthcare professional in a healthcare facility to provide short-term relief for the primary caregiver of a person with chronic kidney disease on dialysis. This option allows home hemodialysis patients to continue their prescribed treatments in-center for a short period of time, giving care providers the freedom to take time off. Reasons for respite care in this study included access dysfunction, puncture difficulties, AVF infection or other infection, retraining, complementary work-up, training for vacation using NxStage for patients that had been using a conventional device, or technical problems at home with the dialysis machine or the water treatment system.

Restless Leg Syndrome
Is a condition that is characterized by an irresistible urge to move one's body to stop uncomfortable or odd sensations. It most commonly affects the legs, but can also affect the arms or torso.

Reverse Osmosis (RO)
A method for purifying water by forcing it through a semi-permeable membrane that prevents the passage of ions.

Rinse Back Volume
Amount of saline required to rinse the patient’s blood back following completion of the hemodialysis treatment.

Rotor
The rotating part of an electronic or mechanical device.
